My interest in "BAKING" started when I first saw my Mum baking cakes in a wood stove in the early 60's. Then I was about 11 or 12. At the age of 12, my 1st attempt at baking was near successful , and realized that I was blessed with this talent. I went on baking all sorts of cakes and all other baked goods and improved my skills on my own. My Dad was my biggest fan , who loved to sample all my baked cakes, pies, breads and cookies and gave it two thumbs up all the time.
I actually bought books and magazines, with money I saved from my school pocket money. My Dad used go grocery shopping once a fortnight, driving out of the Plantation where we lived and I used to always volunteer to go with him, as I could pop into the "Book Shop" that was located next to the grocery store.
When I was 22 and a new mother, I decorated my first cake for my daughter's 1st Birthday. I got the idea from a Wilton Year Book. I invested in a some of the Wilton cake decorating tools too, that were available to us then. I used to substitute some tools with whatever I could use. My friends started to give me as gifts, stuff that I could use for my cake decorating.
Then I went on to teach men and women in Malaysia to sculpt and decorate cakes, thanks to my husband's encouragement & support. After I came to this country in 1989, it gave me the great opportunity to be able to further progress in my knowledge and skills of cake decorating, where everything was easily and readily available. I was actually getting a bit frustrated because I could not find an outlet to share my skills, until I bumped into the chance to teach, using the Wilton Method of Cake-Decorating to men & women who were eager to master this art.
I used to teach at 3 different locations, but now I have taken a leave of absence, when I can spend more time with my family, especially with my grandsons. Now I bake cakes and other goodies for my family and friends.
In the year 2006 I won an award in "People's Choice Awards" category, at a Washington State Sugar Artists Cake Show. That sure gave me a boost.
